In October 2023, the cargo ship VERITY sank in the German Bight following a collision with the bulk carrier POLESIE, resulting in the loss of five crew members. In mid-2024, Koole commenced the complex wreck removal operation, focusing on the recovery of hazardous materials, cargo extraction, and the segmentation of the wreck. The wreck was carefully cut into two sections, lifted using a powerful sheerleg, and transported to the Netherlands for decommissioning. The operation also included site cleanup to ensure safe navigation, with the stern section revealing the body of one of the missing crew members.

As part of this significant maritime salvage effort, an export permit was required for the shipment of the wreck from its sunken site in Germany to the salvage site in the Netherlands, ensuring full compliance with Regulation (EC) No. 1013/2006 on waste shipments. This regulation emphasizes the protection of the environment and human health by strictly regulating the transboundary movement of waste, requiring thorough procedures to prevent harm during transportation and disposal.

We partnered once again with Cores Environment on the notification process. As in previous projects, Cores managed the flow of information to the competent authorities, advised on the documentation required to secure export notification consent, and ensured the operation’s continued progress by coordinating communications.

The operation, successfully completed by early September 2024, marks a significant achievement in enhancing maritime safety and protecting the marine environment in the region.
